Do You Need a Vignette for Slovakia?
Yes, if you’re driving a vehicle weighing up to 3.5 tonnes on a Slovak motorway (diaľnica) or expressway (rýchlostná cesta), you’ll need a valid digital vignette—known as an e-Známka—before entering the motorway network in the Slovak Republic.
Slovakia has had a fully digital vignette system in place since 1 December 2015. There are no physical stickers to display or toll booths where you stop and pay. The system is operated by the NDS (Národná diaľničná spoločnosť) and enforced through automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras positioned across the motorway network, including major routes such as the D1, D2 and D3. This means your vehicle’s vignette is automatically checked as you drive.
As Slovakia borders countries like Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Ukraine, many drivers directly join motorways after crossing the border. In practice, this means you’re expected to already have a valid e-vignette in place before entering the toll road. During our most recent field research trip, we visited several border crossings and observed toll-control signage and ANPR gantries positioned immediately after entry points. At the Rajka–Čunovo crossing, for example, enforcement infrastructure was visible as soon as vehicles entered the motorway. Based on what we saw, drivers should not assume there is a grace period to purchase vignette after they join the motorway network.
We also crossed into Slovakia from the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Austria and spotted overhead toll cameras in place at every border crossing we visited. While we didn’t personally encounter police vignette checks ourselves, customer reports suggest that roadside checks are regularly carried out, especially during the busy summer travel season. For that reason, we strongly recommend buying your Slovakia e-vignette before you begin your journey or before entering any Slovak motorway or expressway.
Vehicles That Require a Slovakia Vignette
All vehicles using Slovak motorways and expressways with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes must have a valid digital vignette.

Trailers: Light trailers attached to vehicles are covered by the towing vehicle’s vignette as long as the combined weight of vehicle and trailer does not exceed 3.5 tonnes. If the combined weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes, a separate vignette is required for the trailer or caravan.
The e-Známka is fully digital and linked directly to your vehicle’s licence plate, which means there’s no physical sticker to display on your windscreen.

Slovakia offers four e-vignette options for vehicles using its motorway and expressway network:

Most vehicles using Slovak motorways and expressways require a valid e-vignette. Only a small number of vehicle categories are exempt.
Official exemptions include
Important: Electric vehicles are not exempt and must have a valid e-vignette when using Slovak toll roads. Motorcycles are exempt and do not require a vignette.
All exempt vehicles must be registered in the official NDS (Národná diaľničná spoločnosť) exemption database before using the motorway network.

Vehicles Over 3.5 Tonnes
Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes aren’t subject to the e-Známka system. Instead, they use the distance-based toll system called MyTO.
This applies to:
- Trucks
- Heavy goods vehicles (HGVs)
- Buses
- Motorhomes exceeding 3.5 tonnes that are not registered as category M1*
* Motorhomes registered as category M1 are exempt from MyTO regardless of weight and can use a standard e-Známka vignette, just like passenger cars. Check your vehicle registration document carefully. If your vehicle is classified as M1, you need an e-vignette rather than an on-board unit (OBU).
Unlike the e-Známka, which charges a fixed fee based on time, MyTO calculates tolls according to the distance travelled on motorways and selected roads. Vehicles using MyTO must be fitted with an on-board unit (OBU), which automatically records journeys and allows toll charges to be calculated.
Unlike the e-Známka (used for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes), MyTO is a completely separate system for heavy vehicles and is required for use on major motorway corridors across the Slovak Republic, such as the D1, D2, D3 and D4. The system is operated and enforced by the NDS.
Where Does the Digital Vignette for Slovakia Apply?
In Slovakia, a valid official motorway permit is required on all motorways (D-roads) and expressways (R-roads), including major routes such as the D1, D2, D3 and D4, as well as the R1, R2, R3, R4, R6 and R7.

Toll-Free Sections
Not every road in Slovakia requires an e-vignette. Some are entirely toll-free. Drivers can use the following roads without purchasing an e-vignette:
- Primary national roads (cesta I. triedy)
- Secondary regional roads (cesta II. triedy)
- Local and county roads (cesta III. triedy)
- Most urban roads and city ring roads that are not part of the motorway or expressway network
These routes cover a large part of the country and are commonly used for local and regional travel.
In addition, since 1 August 2024, a Ministry of Transport decree has made specific motorway and expressway bypass sections around Slovakia’s larger cities toll-free. These include designated sections around i) Bratislava; ii) Nitra; iii) Košice; iv) Prešov; v) Poprad, and vi) Žilina.

It’s important to remember that, in Slovakia, toll-free access generally applies only to roads outside the motorway (D) and expressway (R) network. Once you enter a tolled motorway or expressway section, a valid e-vignette is required. While some border crossing approach roads may have toll-free sections for a short distance, drivers should not rely on these when planning their journey. To avoid heavy fines, we recommend purchasing your digital vignette before travelling or before entering any motorway or expressway.

Driving Without a Valid Vignette in Slovakia
Driving on a motorway (D) or expressway (R) without a valid e-Známka can result in a fine. This applies even if you forgot to purchase a vignette or mistakenly believed a short section of road was exempt. Because enforcement is automated, operates continuously and fully electronically, there are no toll booths, checkpoints, or grace periods once a vehicle enters and is detected on a toll road.
During our own field research, we observed ANPR enforcement gantries positioned very close to motorway border crossings. At the Kittsee–Jarovce crossing into Bratislava, for example, enforcement cameras were active within metres of entering the D2 motorway.
With so little margin for error, it’s best to make sure your vignette is valid before joining the motorway network.
How Enforcement Works
- ANPR cameras - Automatic number plate recognition cameras monitor motorway and expressway entry points and check vignette validity in real time. There are no manual toll booths or payment barriers.
- Roadside police checks - Slovak Police carry out roadside inspections using handheld scanning devices that check licence plates against the national database.
- Fine: €150 on the spot - Drivers found using a toll road without a valid e-Známka can be issued an on-the-spot fine of €150. Administrative fines under Act No. 488/2013 Coll. can be even higher when offences are processed through formal proceedings rather than settled at the roadside.
- No supplementary self-payment option - Unlike some countries, Slovakia does not offer a reduced-rate payment period after a violation has been detected.
- International enforcement - Fines also apply to foreign-registered vehicles and can be pursued across borders under EU Directive 2015/413 on cross-border enforcement of road traffic offences.

Why Buy Online Instead of at the Border?
On 26 February 2026, we entered Slovakia via the Lanžhot–Brodské border crossing. The crossing itself was straightforward, with no officers or ID checks, and several roadside shops on the approach were advertising vignettes for sale.
