Our Story
The Humble Beginning
Maut & Vignette B.V. started in 2014 with a single product: the green Umweltplakette sticker for German low-emission zones.
Back then, there was no automated system. We bought stickers in bulk, packed them by hand, and posted them to drivers all over Europe.
Filling and sending thousands of envelopes wasn’t glamorous, but it taught us something that’s still true today: most drivers don’t want to spend hours figuring out toll systems and regulations. They just want the right permit for their journey, without the hassle.
Adapting to the Digital Era
As more European countries moved from physical stickers to digital toll systems, we moved along with them.
Slovakia introduced its fully digital e-Známka system on 1 December 2015, replacing the traditional windscreen sticker entirely. We added the Slovakian e-vignette to our product range in 2016 and have been working with the system ever since.
That means we’ve spent more than a decade helping drivers navigate Slovakia’s motorway rules and registration requirements. The process may have changed, but our goal has remained the same: make buying a vignette as simple as possible.
Founding Maut & Vignette B.V.
In 2022, we brought our growing collection of digital tolling platforms together under a single company: Maut & Vignette B.V., based in the Netherlands. This allowed us to focus entirely on European tolling and build dedicated country-specific websites rather than trying to serve every market through a single platform. Our mission didn’t change. We simply became better equipped to deliver it.
A European Leader
Today, we run tolling platforms across more than 15 European countries. We’ve processed over 100,000 orders and grown into a team of more than 50 people. The scale is very different from those days of hand filling envelopes, but the principle remains exactly the same: provide a fast, reliable service that makes travel easier.
We Drive the Roads We Write About
A lot of travel websites are built entirely on desk research. We prefer to get behind the wheel and drive the roads ourselves.
In February 2026, Mattijs Wijnmalen and photographer Ujjawal Verma spent five days driving across Slovakia to better understand how the motorway system works in practice. The route included:
- Lanžhot–Brodské (Czech border crossing via D2)
- D1 toward Žilina (with a stop at the OMV service area)
- Svrčinovec–Zwardoń (Polish border crossing via D3),
- Kittsee–Jarovce (Austrian border crossing via D4)
- Rajka–Čunovo (Hungarian border crossing via D2)
Along the way, they photographed the NDS motorway infrastructure, documented ANPR camera gantries, noted enforcement signage, and checked which service stations offered vignette sales.
A couple of observations stood out. Approaching Slovakia from the Czech Republic on the D2, the first enforcement gantries appeared within roughly a kilometre of the Brodské border crossing. There was very little opportunity to leave the motorway and arrange a vignette after entering the country.
Near the Hungarian border at Rajka–Čunovo, approaching via the D2, the service stations visited were focused on Hungarian motorway products rather than Slovak ones. Drivers expecting to sort out their Slovakian vignette at the last minute could easily find themselves caught out.
